Position: Orientation and Mobility Program Coordinator
Reports to: Director of Special Programs
Location: Edison Plaza, 350 Pine St., Ste. 500, Beaumont, Texas

Primary Purpose:
The mission of the Region 5 ESC Special Education Department is to provide professional development, technical assistance, and direct services related to orientation and mobility for Local Education Agencies (LEAs), based on identified needs and TEA recommendations, to support the individual needs of students with disabilities.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred
Certification: Orientation and Mobility Certification-ACVREP
Special Knowledge/Skills:
*Knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations specific to special education.
*Knowledge of current instructional methods and adaptive equipment for individuals with visual impairments.
*Emphasis in areas of : Orientation and Mobility Direct Services
Major Responsibilities:
*Assess students to determine orientation and mobility needs and develop individualized instructional plans.
*Provide direct instruction in orientation and mobility techniques, including cane skills, route planning, environmental awareness, and use of sensory information.
*Collaborate with educational teams to integrate orientation and mobility strategies into students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
*Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings and provide appropriate documentation and progress reports.
*Train students in the use of adaptive equipment, tools, and public transportation systems where appropriate.
*Consult with families, educators, and related service providers to promote skill generalization across environments.
*Travel to multiple school sites and community locations to provide services.
*Maintain accurate records and comply with federal, state, and local guidelines.
*Stay current with developments in the field through professional learning and continuing education.
*Manages time, calendar, and job responsibilities to meet deadlines.
*Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions (Physical Demands/Environmental Factors/ Mental Demands):
*Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
*Posture: Must be physically able to tolerate prolonged sitting, frequent standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting, and standing.
*Motion: Must be physically able to tolerate frequent standing and walking, repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching, occasional driving.
*Environment: Must be physically able to work inside; tolerate frequent district wide travel and statewide travel; regular exposure to noise.
*Mental Demands: Must be able to work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours on occasion, multi-tasking with multiple deadlines.
*Travel will be required.
